Topics to be discussedThe Middle East conflict erupted in late February, triggering a supply crunch that sent China’s butadiene prices soaring to a nine-year high in March. But downstream sectors, squeezed by poor profit margins and persistently weak end-demand, failed to pass on higher costs. Accordingly, butadiene prices tumbled back to pre-conflict levels by June, while a brief rebound followed in July as geopolitical tensions flared up again, though the uptick soon faded as supply gradually recovered. Exports in H1 2026 surged YoY, temporarily shifting China from a net importer to an exporter. As China’s supply continues to normalize and exports are set to rise, can butadiene prices find fresh support in the future, or will they face renewed downward pressure?
As the major downstream sectors of butadiene, PBR and SBR markets were strongly influenced by the butadiene price trend. From January to August 2026, China’s SBR and PBR market prices surged followed by a decline. On the macro front, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East initially provided bullish impetus, but persistent global inflationary pressures exerted a dragging effect on the market. Meanwhile, stable growth in feedstock supply supported increases in China’s PBR and SBR output. The ongoing overseas expansion of China’s tire and downstream enterprises continued to drive steady growth in synthetic rubber exports. Looking ahead to 2027, the market is expected to face a challenging landscape. How will China’s PBR and SBR markets perform? Is there any new change in the supply-demand structure?
